5 tips for overcoming stress this festive season

With less than a month until Christmas, it’s natural to feel a little overwhelmed. This anxiety is compounded this year by Melbourians being fresh out of lockdown.

Suddenly family and friends are back on the must see list, along with all of the usual work and home commitments.

Adjusting to this change of pace (not to mention the traffic) has left many of my clients feeling absolutely exhausted.

Scheduling flights to fly interstate to see family adds another layer of complexity to the mix, when Australian borders outside of Victoria have been rigid for so long.

Now amid the rush to prepare for hosting Christmas lunch or simply buying presents, we are thrust into a very stressful period.

So what can be done to enjoy Christmas this year and have energy to burn:

  • Be realistic about what you have time to get done. It’s very easy to run yourself raggard by wanting everything to be perfect. (The reality is that you family will love you regardless of whether our house is pristine, remember it’s your home not a display home!)
  • Be kind to yourself. Delegate responsibilites to others and don’t be afraid of asking for help, everyone wants to pitch in and contribute their favorite dish, etc.
  • Do as much preparation the day before or early on the day so you have time to relax with a cuppa and some nibbles before the guests arrive. After all, you deserve a little time to enjoy the serenity as you will be flat strap entertaining throughout much of the day and taking a short break for yourself can do wonder for frayed nerves.
  • Once the dessert is out of the way, let the guests help you with cleaning up the dishes, they’re dying to help! (Seriously anyone who hasn’t had to cook or host Christmas is so grateful they can just come and enjoy that they are more than happy to be given a job to do.)
  • And finally clock off for the afternoon. Set up a self serve afternoon tea station so guests can make their own cuppas and move as far away from the kitchen as possible. (Your guests want you to enjoy yourself and they want to talk to you too. So make yourself available and someone will happily bring you anything you desire.

Often we feel anxious and overwhelmed because we feel like we are being taken for granted. By being a ‘team leader’ you can get everyone involved in the Christmas day festivities and take some of the pressure off.

When all else fails nutrients & natural medicine can help immensly to help calm your nerves and give you a spring in your step.

If you feel that you need help preparing for Christmas we have a special offer for our female clients in Melbourne’s western suburbs. Book an initial Naturopathic or Nutrition consultation for just $99 (normally $130) to get the help you need to thrive this festive season.

Is you teen overwhelmed with stress & anxiety?

The recent horrifying events in New Zealand and the blanket media coverage that has followed, is heartbreaking and stories of survival and devastation are everywhere we look.

Every TV station, every radio channel, every news stand on social media and the world wide web.

Our hearts go out to our NZ neighbors as we all struggle to understand how this could have happened.

Teenagers are living in a world where the flow of news is more accessible and more pervasive than ever before. Before they’ve barely woken up, they’re bombarded with social media new feeds on their phones, bringing them up to date on all the latest details that have happened while they were asleep.

The constant availability of such information at a moments notice, can produce a heightened sense of anxiety and depression in young people.

In the last few weeks the news has been dominated by stories of child sex abuse and this week it’s terrorist attacks in NZ. Is it any wonder that our young people are experiencing higher rates of mental health issues that ever before.

Teens worry about everything. They may not always tell their parents but it can show up in an inability to sleep, socialize, eat and attend school.  They may have less motivation for doing things that they normally enjoy, less concentration and feelings of being overwhelmed. They take on these worldly worries in addition to their normal daily lives and it can quickly become all too much.

Encouraging your teen to take a holistic approach to their life can help them regain their sense of mental and emotional wellbeing.

Persistent negative thoughts and fears must be addressed and natural health care can be employed to great effect in boosting their feelings of positivity and happiness.

Eating well, sleeping well and focusing on the good in their world, can help to rebalance their thinking and allow them to stress less.

Happy International Women’s Day – March 8

Today (International Women’s Day) we are reminded of the phenomenal contribution that women make to our society.

However, there is still a long way to go.

One area of the women’s movement that is seldom highlighted and where women need to make more progress, is in the field of women’s health.

Admittedly, women now have access to a huge array of medical interventions and services, however, what is really missing is work life balance to ensure that women’s health and wellness is maintained.

Far too often women are putting themselves last while attending to the needs of their family and career to their own determent.

My female clients are often so depleted and overwhelmed by their responsibilities that they forget all about their own self care until it becomes a major concern.

Improving the health and wellbeing of women is the primary focus of my clinic.

If women could recognize the early signs of not coping physically and emotionally they can get help before it becomes a major stumbling block.

Stress is undoubtedly the biggest underlying issue that women face.

As is eating foods that don’t nourish them but are quick and easy to prepare.

Without addressing these issues women can experience hormonal dysfunction, digestive issues, fatigue, recurrent infections and then more stress as it becomes harder and harder to simply get through a normal day and keep up with all of her responsibilities.

Prevention and early intervention is the optimal way to stay healthy. So if you’re feeling a little under the weather now is the time to take action.
